Wayne Rooney claimed that Manchester United were disappointed on Sunday, despite their rescuing of a 3-3 draw after being 3-0 down at Chelsea.
The point taken from Stanford Bridge, and secured by two converted Rooney penalties and a Javier Hernandez header, means that champions United trail Premier League leaders Manchester City by two points with 14 games left to play. Rooney, however, feels they should never have been 3-0 down – and should still have won when they were.
Jonny Evans was unfortunate to divert a Daniel Sturridge cross into his own net and give Chelsea a half-time lead, but United looked out of it after early second half goals from Juan Mata and David Luiz.
"It's two points lost," Rooney told Sky Sports regardless, following a stellar comeback from his side.
"We understand that, but after being 3-0 down - the City players at home must have liked that - we enjoyed the way we fought back.
"A lot of teams might have put their heads down and accepted defeat, but we never put our heads down."
On the penalties, which not everybody was pleased with the awarding of, the England striker added: "The two (penalties) we got I'm not sure. Thankfully the referee gave them.
"I was always confident. I waited for the keeper to make his move and put it the other way."
His manager Sir Alex Ferguson later repeated Rooney’s words, saying: "It is two points dropped, but we played so well apart from the ten minutes after half-time.
"It's not easy coming back from 3-0 down. That's a massive effort."
