Martinez told to splash the cash

by Setanta Staff , 25 January 2012 Latics boss told to splash the cash

Roberto Martinez has reportedly been given £5m to spend on new players in a bid to halt Wigan's slide towards the Championship.

The Latics manager has been given the go-ahead to splash out in the transfer market over the next seven days by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan with the club still rooted to the foot of the Premier League table.

Having failed with two previous attempts to sign Birmingham winger Jean Beausejour, Martinez finally looks set to complete a deal for the Chile international with the winger set to finalise a £3m deal over the next few days.

Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard has also been linked with a switch, although any deal is understood to be a long way off being completed.
