Parker edges closer to Spurs

by Oli Skehan , 30 August 2011

Scott Parker has handed in a transfer request at West Ham United with rumours of a move to Tottenham Hotspur looming.

The England midfielder, who almost managed to lead his stricken team out of the relegation positions in the Premier League at the end of last year but ultimately failed, seeing the Hammers fall to 20th place, was never going to stay in the nPower Championship for very long - and he's issued a statement to the fans discussing his motivation for leaving.

It reads: "I have had a fantastic four years at West Ham United and will never forget all the support I have had from the fans and everyone associated with the club.

"The manager and board have tried hard to convince me to stay but at this stage in my career, I need to be playing in the Premier League, especially now that I am involved with England.

"I hope the fans will understand and respect my decision and I wish the club every success in their fight for promotion this season.
