Preview: Accenture Match Play

by Michelle Fortune , 21 February 2012

The majority of the world's top 64 are in Arizona this week for the World Golf Championship Accenture Match Play where the task is simple; win if you want to stay in the hunt for the big prize come Sunday afternoon.

This week's event is one of the richest tournaments of the year with over $8million up for grabs and it is good preparation for those hoping to represent either the United States or Europe in the Ryder Cup later in the season.

Players are put in four brackets (Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Bobby Jones) with their world ranking determining their seeding for the tournament.

There are some tasty first round matches with Luke Donald set to take on Ernie Els, who booked his place in the competition courtesy of a number of withdrawals, and Tiger Woods going up against Spaniard Gonzolo Fernandez-Castano.

As always it is very hard to predict how a match play event will go with players having to play 18good holes to be assured of a place in the next round.

Since the tournament moved to the Dove Mountain course at the Ritz-Carlton Americans have failed to reach the finals but they are strong match-play competitors and all seven PGA Tour events this year have been won by Americans.

An ability to hit long is not necessary - Luke Donald and Ian Poulter proved this in 2011 and 2010 - but anyone hoping to win will need to avoid mistakes and stay calm under pressure.

Sergio Garcia has a proven track record at match play, albeit in the Ryder Cup, and his improvement in form could see the Spaniard through to the latter stages of the competition, while Graeme McDowell proved in the 2010 Ryder Cup that he has the nerve to go far.

The Northern Ireland golfer reached the third round last year and looked on course to progress further until his surprise loss to YE Yang. Don't let that put you off, however, as Donald had never made it beyond the third round before his success.
