Napoli v Chelsea as it happened

by JP Lonergan , 21 February 2012

See how all the action unfolded at Stadio San Paolo as Napoli defeated Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Tuesday.

Napoli 3-1 Chelsea (FT)

21.44: That's it from me. The report from this game can be viewed right here, with reaction from Juan Mata and Petr Cech here. Good night and if you're a Chelsea fan, well cheer up - it's only half-time!

21.41: It's all over. Chelsea have been beaten 3-1 in what was an enthralling game in Naples. Villas-Boas will no doubt be under even more pressure after this as his side, despite having as many chances as the Serie A men, now have so much to do to reach the last eight. The second leg is in three weeks' time. It will be Chelsea's biggest night IN YEARS!

FULL-TIME: NAPOLI 3-1 CHELSEA!

21.38:
Ooooh, a shot from Lampard is put behind by the showboating De Sanctis. That could have been huge.

21.36: In stoppage-time Drogba has a go when he should not have. Sturridge was coming in behind him to meet Cole's cross, with the Ivorian putting the ball over with an awkward effort as the cross came in behind him.

21.33: Time is almost up in Italy. It remains Napoli 3-1 Chelsea. Are we looking at a quarter-final line-up without an English side?

21.29: Just over five minutes remain at Stadio San Paolo. Chelsea are not in a good position. Cavani and Lavezzi have really put them on the brink. A second away goal, however, would change everything.

21.15: BIG NAPOLI CHANCE: That was almost the tie. Hamsik received the ball from Cavani on the left and sold Ivanovic before squaring to where Maggio saw his point-blank effort cleared off the line by Cole. Ambitious Napoli arms go up to suggest the ball was over the line. It was not. It remains 3-1 and that was Hamsik's last action as Pandev, who was part of the Inter Milan side that knocked Chelsea out at this stage two years ago, takes his place.

21.23: Napoli scramble clear a corner as Chelsea continue to try and find a second. The Serie A side may regret their more defensive approach in the last uarter. There have been few signs that they are sound in defence. They just have not been punished as much as Chelsea have yet.

21.18: Star man Lavezzi has been replaced by former Bolton man Blerim Dzemaili for Napoli. Are they happy to hold what they have?

21.16: There have been so many defensive mistakes in this game. Can Chelsea, with the reinforcements from their bench, force another and put themselves right back in contention in this tie? They have 18 minutes!

21.13: Lampard and Essien, but not Torres, are coming on. Essien replaces Meireles, with Lampard taking the place of Malouda.

Oh dear! Dreadful defending as Luiz gets all in a muddle and is robbed by Cavani on the edge of the area. Cech races from his goal to try and aid his ailing defenders, but Cavani is able to slip the ball across to Lavezzi and he fires home for his seocnd goal and a lead of two for Napoli.

21.09: NAPOLI GOAL - Lavezzi! 3-1!

21.08:
It remains a chance-for-chance affair with Cech holding an ambitious Gargano effort and De Sanctis holding a Sturridge opportunity.

21.04: Chelsea so close! A fine ball from Malouda almosts put Drogba in, but Napoli concede a corner. From the set-piece Cahill has a free header, but outs it wide to De Sanctis' left.

20.58: De Sanctis holds an effort from outside the box from Mata, before Lavezzi spurns a huge chance at the other end when shooting to the right of Cech's goal from eight yards.

20.54: Napoli break after a Chelsea corner, but Cavani's cross from the left was far too close to Cech and he easily gathered. It is end-to-end though, with De Sanctis having to pounce immediately on a Malouda shot at the other end.

20.50: The second half is underway in Naples. Where do Chelsea go from here? We will soon see.

Well that was a cracking first half that really flew by. Chelsea weathered an early storm to take the lead, but now find themselves behind after two of Napoli's 'Holy Trinity' found the net. Can Villas-Boas' men turn it around in the second half or is the Portuguese in for another night of torment. The 45 minutes to come will reveal all and are coming up soon. Stay with us!

20.34: HALF-TIME: NAPOLI 2-1 CHELSEA.

I was just about to say how much the first half had flown to get to three minutes of stoppage-time, only for the home side to come up with a goal. Cavani beat Ivanovic to a ball in from the right and his shoulder directed it to Cech's net. The hosts have come from behind to lead.

20.31: NAPOLI GOAL - Cavani in first-half stoppage-time!

20.26: All action in Naples! Cavani was booked when celebrating Lavezzi's goal before Ramires weaved his way into the area only to fire over for Chelsea. Raul Meireles, meanwhile, who was culpable for that Lavezzi goal has just been boked so he will miss the second leg.

Napoli coach Walter Mazzari will also have to sit in the stand for that one, as is the case tonight with the home side not having their manager on the sidelines to guide them.

It's Lavezzi's first Champions League goal as the Argentine is given all the time he needs to curl in a sweet finish from the edge of the box. Cech is beaten to his left and the sides are all square.

20.23: NAPOLI GOAL - Lavezzi!

20.20:
Chelsea break up the other end through Sturridge and Mata is free in the middle. However, the young forward keeps his head down and tries to go himself, winning a corner but frustrating his team-mate. From the corner, De Sanctis is nowhere as David Luiz loses Cannavaro but can only head over the bar.

20.19: That goal has not silenced the home support, but they are now getting on the backs of their own players who had started the game so well. They remain a big threat to Chelsea, however, with Lavezzi dangerous from set-pieces - albeit if his most recent free-kick into the area has come to nothing.

Well what about that? It had been a Napoli-dominated first half but Villas-Boas' attacking selection has been rewarded, Their heavy numbers in the opposing half saw Drogba and Sturridge outnumber the defenders on the right. Sturridge played the ball in and Paolo Cannavaro was only able to mis-kick the clearance into the path of Mata, who finished calmly past Morgan De Sanctis for what could be the most PRICELESS of away goals.

20.16: CHELSEA GOAL - Juan Mata!

20.09:
Halfway through the first half and all the chances have fallen to Napoli. That has added to an already vibrant atmosphere, and Chelsea really need to stamp a mark on the game to try and silence the vocal home support. There has been little sign of that yet.

20.04: But back up the other end Cech has to come to Chelsea's rescue again. Hamsik slips Christian Maggio in behind new man Cole on Napoli's right and his snapshot is just kept at bay by the Czech goalkeeper.

20.02: We were not seeing much of Cheslea getting into the Napoli half at all, but some lax play at the back from Napoli just now almost allowed Florent Malouda and Daniel Sturridge to profit from a Cech long ball. The danger was, however, cleared.

19.58: Sloppy play from Ramires allows Walter Gargano to get possession. The move leads to Lavezzi playing in Cavani, but the offside flag is up as he races around Cech.

19.57: As expected Cole is on for Bosingwa. Can he now play his part in helping Chelsea into the quarter-finals of this competition for the sixth tine in seven seasons?

19.55: Big chance for Napoli! Cavani found himself onside in between Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic, and only a fine stop from Petr Cech denied the Uruguayan's shot from the left of the area. Meanwhile, Bosingwa looks to have damaged his hamstring and Cole, having been left out, is now set for an early introduction.

19.50: Napoli have been faster out of the traps, if only just, with some probing balls forward. Nothing major to report just yet though as the rain barrages down on both sets of players.

19.46: GAME ON! Chelsea all in black, Napoli in light blue. Let's hope for a European classic!

19.43: Chelsea's team has caused plenty of debate ahead of kick-off. We are about to find out if Villas-Boas' choices can ease the huge pressure he has found himself under. We are ready to roll in Italy!

19.38: Just seven minutes to go until kick-off in Naples. Make no mistake - this is a massive night for Chelsea, whose participation in this competition next year is in so much doubt as they labour in the Premier League. Napoli will not be sympathetitc though. They are in sixth place in Serie A and want to prolong their European season as long as possible.

19.27: Ashley Cole will be back in the team after tonight's game, so says Villas-Boas. If he is fit enough to be on th ebench surely he should be starting tonight, rather than the right-footed Bosingwa.

19.25: The game in Naples is this evening's second Champions League offering. Already, CSKA Moscow somehow drew 1-1 at home to Real Madrid. Real dominated and led for the majority through a Cristiano Ronaldo goal, with the Russians barely testing them. However, three minutes into stoppage-time, Pontus Wernbloom struck to level the tie ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu.

19.15: Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of the Champions League last 16 first leg clash of Napoli and Chelsea.

With the Manchester clubs long gone and Arsenal as good as out as well after last week's 4-0 humbling by AC Milan, Chelsea go into tonight's game as the English Premier League's only real chance of success in the competition.

However, their recent form has been pretty poor and it seems that not all is well in the camp, leaving manager Andre Villas-Boas under the world of pressure before this game in Naples.

Villas-Boas is without captain John Terry, who has been ruled out for up to two months, while Ashley Cole has not been deemed fit enough to start either and joins Michael Essien, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres on the bench.

Didier Drogba leads the line, with support from Daniel Sturridge and Juan Mata, while there is a Champions League debut for Gary Cahill. Jose Bosingwa, it seems, will start at left back.

Napoli, who played a big role in knocking Manchester City out before Christmas, have Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi up front, while Gokhan Inler will provide backbone behind the glorious midfield talent that is Marek Hamsik. Goran Pandev is on the bench, while tonight's referee is Spaniard Carlos Velasco Carballo.
