Play-off success for Haas

Bill Haas held his nerve to clinch the Northern Trust Open after a three-man play-off at the Riviera Golf Club in California.

Haas carded a two-under-par 69 to leave him ain the clubhouse lead at seven-under-par but he missed out on outright victory when Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley each birdied the par-four 18th for matching 71s.

That resulted in a sudden death playoff and after all three matched each others efforts at the first extra hole they headed down the tenth.

Mickelson produced the best drive of the three but Haas managed to chip on to the green before sinking a monster 45-foot birdie. Neither Mickelson nor Bradley were able to birdie their own handing Haas the victory.

"I never expected to make a 40-footer, and especially in that situation," Haas told pgatour.com.

"That was a little bit of luck involved, but felt like I put a good roll on it, and it was meant to be, I guess."

Bradley, last year's PGA Championship winner, paid tribute to the winner, saying: "I couldn't have hit a better shot. I had about a 15 percent chance of keeping that on grass where I could putt it. It was one of the best shots I've ever hit.

"But Bill Haas, you've got to give him a lot of credit. It's good to see a fellow belly putter make a putt like that. I'm happy for him."

Mickelson added: "Bill hit a tremendous putt. We're thinking it's a very difficult three, it's a defensive hole. You're just trying to make four believe it or not.

"It's only 290 yards, 280 yards, but you're trying to make par. He ended up making a 50-, 60-footer and that's going to do it."

Sergio Garcia's 64 saw him earn a share of fourth place on five-under-par alongside Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Jarrod Lyle.
