Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum is to decide on a successor to Richard Hills before the start of the British turf season.
Hills' decision to retire after the Dubai World Cup has left Hamdan without a retained rider but with the new Flat season just a few weeks away the owner's racing manager has confirmed a replacement will be appointed sooner rather than later.
"Nothing has been finalised yet. There has been plenty of speculation and now we have to think what to do and I need to speak to Sheikh Hamdan before anything is confirmed," said Gold.
"The season is coming up and I've got to sort it out quite quickly. It could be very soon.
"It's Sheikh Hamdan's call, so I've got to confirm everything with him first."
Hills has been Sheikh Hamdan's first jockey for 15 years but he has decided the time has come for him to step down and he will retire from race riding at Meydan on March 31.
Tadhg O'Shea currently acts as number two to Hills and is considered by many to be the favourite to make the step up, while Silvestre de Sousa's name has also been mentioned.
Gold admits candidates are few and far between and confirmed that both O'Shea and de Sousa are in the running for the position.
"There are only so many people who would be in the frame and those that are being mentioned are very much in the frame," he added.
Hills is expected to be offered a role within Hamdan's racing team and Gold believes he would be a huge asset to the operation.
"Richard has been a huge asset to the operation. He's been around a long time, not just as first jockey but as second jockey before that," he went on.
"He's been a huge help to me personally in assessing horses and trying to work out futures for them or the ones that need to move on and not going to cut the mustard. He's been enormously helpful over the years.
"I've got to talk to Sheikh Hamdan about this. Hopefully he can still be involved and I know he's still very keen to continue to ride work and to do anything that he can."
