Whiteford leads at halfway in India

Peter Whiteford is well in the hunt for his maiden European Tour title after leading at the halfway stage of the Avantha Masters.

The 31-year-old Scot is ten-under-par at the tournament in New Delhi - which features none of the world's top 60 - two ahead of Thailand's Prom Meesawat.

The world number 236 followed up his opening round 66 with an erratic 68 in chilly and damp early conditions on day two, which included an eagle, five birdies and three bogies.

"It's been a long time since I've had two good rounds in a row," said Whiteford.

"It was a lot harder first thing. The ball wasn't going anywhere at that time in the morning and I had a bit of a sticky patch, but then had a decent back nine.

"I wouldn't say the swing feels brilliant, but sometimes you play your best golf when you're struggling a wee bit."

Former world junior champion Meesawat birdied five of the last six holes to card 64 - best of the week so far - to keep within touching distance of Whiteford.

Four players in the shape of Jean-Bapiste Gonnet, Chapchai Nirat, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Kieran Pratt are tied for third place on seven under.

Wales' Jamie Donaldson is four shots off the pace, with a second round of 70 leaving him tied for seventh spot.

American John Daly withdrew after carding a first round 79 to go for x-rays on possible ligament damage to his right elbow.
