Sessegnon the hero for Sunderland

by Tony Cuddihy , 08 February 2012

Goals from Jack Colback and Stephane Sessegnon, in extra time, gave Sunderland a hard fought 2-1 win over North-East rivals Middlesbrough in their FA Cup fourth round replay on Wednesday.

Lukas Jutkiewicz's first goal for Boro had brought the game into an added half an hour.

Middlesbrough had enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, with Jutkiewicz and Julio Arca forcing John O'Shea and Simon Mignolet to be at their best.

Colback then drove a shot across goal, before Seb Hines nearly scored for Tony Mowbray's side with an instinctive volley.

Sunderland had the lead three minutes before half-time, when Fraizer Campbell knocked the ball into the path of Colback, whose powerful shot rocketed into the net off the crossbar.

Middlesbrough equalised twelve minutes into the second half when young striker Curtis Main found his partner Jutkiewicz. The former Coventry man fought off Michael Turner before slotting the ball past Mignolet.

Sessegnon and Larsson had half chances for Sunderland as full-time approached, as did Thomson and Tony McMahon for Middlesbrough, but ultimately the sides could not be separated after 180 minutes.

With the Championship side tiring, it was left to Benin international Sessegnon to take advantage.

He played in Connor Wickham and, when the ball was cleared from the young striker's feet, it fell back into the path of the midfielder and Sessegnon was the hero for Martin O'Neill's side.
